We have received various inquiries highlighting questions about loan-out corporations' ability to operate in California. As we have previously stated, EDD is not taking action to ban these companies in California.

The message proclaims such an action is necessary as part of EDD’s transition from Bank of America to Money Network and this is not true.

California’s employers added 28,300 nonfarm payroll jobs in March 2024 and the unemployment rate held steady at 5.3 percent, according to data released today by the Employment Development Department (EDD) from two surveys. The job gain follows a job loss of 6,600 in February mostly due to weather impacts - revised down by 3,200. But job growth has gained momentum overall during the last eight months with a total gain of 205,200 jobs and an average monthly increase of 25,700 jobs.

The Employment Development Department (EDD) announced today that it has awarded $995,000 to the South Bay Workforce Investment Board, Inc. (SBWIB) to offer assistance to 965 workers laid off by Northrop Grumman Space Systems in Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, and El Segundo. The SBWIB will use the funding to provide training, education, and job services to guide these aerospace industry workers into high-quality careers that offer financial stability and opportunities for advancement in the South Bay and greater Los Angeles regions.

San Diego County workers whose employment or self-employment was impacted by severe winter storms and flooding between January 21 and January 23, 2024, are now able to apply for federal Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) benefits. The new DUA availability follows a presidential major disaster declaration (FEMA-4758-DR) that was issued on February 19, 2024.

The Employment Development Department (EDD) announced today it has awarded $1 million to International Rescue Committee, Inc., (IRC), which will provide technical assistance and continuous improvement services to a portfolio of English Language Learner (ELL) Integrated Education and Training programs across California. These programs help ELLs gain equitable access to high-quality jobs. The grant will be used to assist eight funding recipients that were awarded a total of $17.9 million in August 2023 from the ELL Integrated Education and Training Fund for Program Year 2022-23.

Starting February 15, 2024, the Employment Development Department (EDD) begins issuing payments for unemployment, disability, and Paid Family Leave customers on new Money Network prepaid debit cards. Benefit payments will no longer be issued on Bank of America debit cards. The EDD previously announced it was reaching out to its customers with related timelines and information to assist them in transitioning to Money Network Cards.
