California’s employers added 6,800 nonfarm payroll jobs1in August 2024 as the unemployment rate rose to 5.3 percent after three consecutive months at 5.2 percent according to data released by the Employment Development Department (EDD). August’s job gain follows a revised job gain of 29,900 for the previous month.

The Employment Development Department (EDD) announced today it has awarded $100,000 to La Cooperativa Campesino de California, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping California’s farmworkers achieve lasting prosperity and self-sufficiency through education, training, job placement, and other supportive services. La Cooperativa will use the grant funds to develop and conduct radio talk shows to inform migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their families of various programs, benefits, and services offered through EDD and its community partners.

Californians receiving unemployment, disability, or Paid Family Leave benefit payments can now enroll in direct deposit – a safe, fast, and convenient way for both existing and new claimants to receive payments automatically into a personal bank account. In addition to prepaid debit card or mailed checks, benefit program customers can choose the payment option that best meets their individual needs.
