Simplified Chinese | Traditional Chinese

The Employment Development Department (EDD) is expanding language access options in its myEDD web portal and UI Online for unemployment benefits. Starting December 14, 2023, individuals can apply for unemployment benefits and manage their claims via applications translated into Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese as well as Vietnamese. This is in addition to the English and Spanish applications already offered. The EDD will launch another update to its online systems in March 2024 to further expand language access to individuals who prefer to apply with a Korean, Armenian, or Tagalog application. These seven languages represent the top languages spoken by working-age adults in California.

Employment Development Department (EDD) staff and local volunteers served approximately 2,500 Imperial County agricultural workers a pre-dawn breakfast today of tamales, beans, salsa, sweet bread, and coffee in recognition of their essential role in feeding the people of California, the nation, and beyond. For 44 years now, the EDD and local partners have hosted the annual Farm Workers Appreciation Breakfast in Calexico, California, as a way of thanking agricultural workers for their hard work, and the invaluable contributions they make to the state’s economy.

The Employment Development Department (EDD) is changing banks for delivery of unemployment (UI), disability (DI), and Paid Family Leave (PFL) benefits. The transition from Bank of America to Money Network will begin with issuing new, enhanced prepaid debit cards with microchips, followed by providing a new direct deposit option later in the new year. Starting Monday, December 4, 2023, the EDD will send letters to about 850,000 Californians with active benefit claims informing them of key transition dates and actions.

The California Employment Development Department (EDD) announced today it has awarded over $760,000 to the California Labor Federation (CLF) to conduct employment services outreach to workers dislocated by the closure of Yellow Freight Corporation in multiple locations across California. CLF will use these funds to provide guidance and information on available job-related assistance and services to more than 2,229 dislocated workers represented by 19 California Teamster Locals.

California’s unemployment rate rose slightly to 4.7 percent as the state’s employers added 8,700 nonfarm payroll jobs to the economy, according to data released today by the California Employment Development Department (EDD) from two surveys. Total nonfarm employment for August 2023 was revised down by 19,900 jobs due, in large part, to revised reductions in the Professional & Business Services sector.

The California Employment Development Department (EDD) announced today it has awarded $175,000 to help workers and businesses in Camarillo affected by the closure of the Ventura Youth Correctional Facility on June 30, 2023. The Workforce Development Board of Ventura County will use these funds to identify employment service needs for more than 90 of the facility’s employees, as well as the needs of surrounding businesses.

The California Employment Development Department (EDD) announced today that it has awarded $1 million to Corporation for a Skilled Workforce (CSW) to make improvements to the Reemployment Services and Eligibility Assessment (RESEA) program administered in California. This funding will help provide more effective reemployment strategies for claimants most likely to exhaust Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits, and to support improved efficiency and effectiveness in California’s workforce system.

The Employment Development Department (EDD) announced today it has awarded more than $648,000 for the Supply Chain and Worker Readiness Program (the Program), an integral part of Humboldt County’s groundbreaking offshore wind energy project. The Program is designed to facilitate workforce development efforts over the entire offshore wind project lifecycle and will utilize funds for research, community preparation, and workforce partner development. The funding will also be applied towards the education and capacity building of local businesses to meet Humboldt County’s long-term workforce needs while this new industry is established.

Total nonfarm employment for July 2023 was revised down by 19,000 jobs due to revised reductions in Leisure & Hospitality, Information, and Government industry sectors.

The California Employment Development Department (EDD) has awarded $4 million to the California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee (Cal-JAC) to expand and develop apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs to recruit, train, and employ firefighters and paramedics. The grant will prioritize the inclusion of young adults who come from a disadvantaged or underrepresented background.
