Salinas Veteran Overcomes Work and Housing Barriers With the Help of EDD Services
At the beginning of 2025, veteran Thomas Hawkins was facing employment, housing, and income challenges. That’s when he decided to visit the Employment Development Department’s (EDD’s) Salinas office.
After giving Hawkins an initial assessment, EDD’s Disabled Veterans Outreach Program specialist Jeremy Wilson secured temporary housing for Thomas at the Veterans Transition Center in Marina, CA. The location not only provides housing but also access to a food pantry to help meet his nutritional needs.
While working with the EDD, Thomas was able to get a housing program referral, update his resume, and help strengthen his interview and job readiness skills.
With a stronger resume and improved preparation, Thomas started his search for a new job, which included attending EDD-sponsored job fairs in the Salinas area. Wilson reached out to the local Veterans Transition Center to ask about volunteer opportunities.
Thomas was accepted as a volunteer, and through his dedication and stellar performance, he was offered a part-time paid position working as a driver, front desk work, and assisting in the clothing room.
"Thanks to Jeremy for helping me build a resume and telling me about hiring events,” said Thomas. “I was lost trying to find work. Through his dedication working with me, got me to where I am today. Thank you.”
Thomas couldn’t be happier with his new job and shared that, combined with his retirement benefits, his current income meets his needs. He is doing well and is content with his current employment situation.
