When Navy veteran Frederick “Joe” Schneider walked into the America’s Job Center of California in San Luis Obispo in March 2024, he had just been laid off and was facing some serious challenges. With limited income and no reliable transportation, finding a new job felt like a steep, uphill climb. But thanks to the support he received from the Employment Development Department (EDD), he found his way to employment success.

Schneider was connected with Alan McKean, a Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Specialist with EDD. As a fellow veteran, McKean understood the unique challenges veterans face when transitioning to civilian life. He knew that with the right guidance and resources, Schneider could get back on his feet.

After a thorough assessment, McKean determined Schneider qualified for Jobs for Veterans State Grant (JVSG) services. Together, they built an individual employment plan that focused on solving immediate issues — starting with transportation — and creating a strong resume that highlighted Schneider’s Navy background and his construction experience he had gained along the way.

Last December, McKean connected Schneider with an employment recruiter from Aerotek. Within a few weeks, Schneider was hired full time as an assembler with Clearwater Corporation in San Luis Obispo (SLO). He now earns $24 an hour, and has access to benefits from his employer.

Schneider is grateful for the support he received from EDD and its partners. “I really appreciate all the help from EDD and the JVSG program,” said Schneider. “Alan was there every step of the way, with constant support and referrals. I would definitely recommend their services to any veteran looking for work or assistance.”

This veteran’s story goes beyond just finding a job. Schneider is now giving back by volunteering alongside McKean at veteran-focused events like the SLO Veterans Collaborative and Veterans Affairs Open House. “I always want to help my veteran brothers and sisters any way I can,” said Schneider.

Schneider’s journey shows how powerful the right support can be, and how veterans helping veterans can change lives. Thanks to EDD and dedicated specialists like Alan McKean, veterans like Schneider are finding success, stability, and a renewed sense of purpose.
