From Service to Success: How Daniel Ruiz-Camacho Found His Path with EDD Support

Army Reserve veteran Daniel Ruiz-Camacho took an important step toward his future when he walked into the East San Gabriel Valley America’s Job Center of California (AJCC) in Los Angeles County. Looking for support to find a meaningful job, Daniel was quickly evaluated by the center’s Veterans Services Navigator, who recognized his readiness and potential. From there, Daniel was connected with Rose Gudiel-Escobar, a dedicated Employment Development Department (EDD) Program Representative.
Daniel wanted help with job referrals, resume writing, job searching, and interview preparation. Rose immediately stepped in by providing opportunities for workshops focused on job searching and interviewing skills. She provided Daniel one-on-one coaching, teaching him how to craft a standout resume using online templates and sharing expert tips to highlight his strengths effectively.
“Rose helped me see the positive side of my skills and ensured I had opportunities to connect with employers actively hiring,” said Ruiz-Camacho. “Which lead to me finding a job opportunity with Southeast Los Angeles County Workforce Development Board [SELACO].”
To prepare for his interview with SELACO, Daniel participated in mock interviews and applied for their Youth Career Development Specialist position. His impressive military background, skills, and education caught SELACO’s attention in a bigger way.
Recognizing his value, SELACO offered Daniel an even better position aligned with his experience as a Veteran Career Development Specialist II. This new role came with significantly higher pay — from $50,368 to $60,000 annually — including an increase to $64,000 after probation.
Daniel started his new job this past June, and is ready to apply his case management skills and experience as a Service Staff Analyst in the Army Reserves to make a difference in the local community.
Reflecting on his journey, Daniel offers this advice, “Keep moving forward, even when things get tough. Eventually, you will find a job that fits your skills, and you will have joy once your patience is rewarded.”
Daniel’s story is a powerful reminder that with the right support and determination, new opportunities can lead to meaningful and rewarding careers.
