Issued: August 25, 2023
The Employment Development Department (EDD), in coordination with the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency (LWDA), is pleased to announce the award of $4 million from the State of California General Fund for the Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Program (FJAP) Program Year (PY) 2022-23 Solicitation for Proposal (SFP). These funds will expand and develop apprenticeships and pre-apprenticeships that recruit, train, and employ firefighters and paramedics prioritizing the inclusion of young adults who come from a disadvantaged or underrepresented background.
The awarded organization will facilitate the expansion and development of apprenticeships and pre-apprenticeships by incorporating data-proven strategies to recruit, train, and employ firefighters and paramedics. The grant supports the preliminary research and planning, development, and the implementation of training programs for apprenticeships and pre-apprenticeships and registered programs sponsored by the California Apprenticeship Council (CAC) defined in Labor Code Section 3070 and registered with the California Division of Apprenticeship Standards (DAS).
Consistent with the objective of the EMS Intermediary PY 22-23 SFP, the goal is to recruit, train, hire, and advance an ethnically and culturally inclusive health and human services workforce, with improved diversity and higher wages, and can serve their local community with basic life support care, thereby strengthening the healthcare system. The program is designed to increase the number of EMS Corp program graduates, or other individuals in local communities, enter a firefighter apprenticeship or pre-apprenticeship training program.
The EDD expects the performance period to be between 48 – 54 months. Information about the awardee and descriptions of their project is available on the EDD Workforce Development Solicitation for Proposals webpage.
