California State Government Employees Automated Phone Information System

This information will help you use the SDI automated phone system. Before you dial our toll-free 800 numbers, please take time to review this information.

For Claim and General Information for State Employee Non-Industrial Disability Insurance (NDI), Disability Insurance (DI), and Paid Family Leave (PFL)

NOTE: The number you have called is for state employee claims only and anyone who has already been identified as an EDD employee relative or a friend through an initial claim. Our representatives can only access state employee and identified EDD employee relative or friend’s claims. You must, also, be a member of the Public Employees’ Retirement System, PERS, the State Teacher’s Retirement System, STRS, a State Officer, or an employee of the Legislature. EDD employee relatives or friends do not need to be affiliated with any state entity or organization.

Special instructions or announcements may be played prior to the main menu. A brief description of menu items will then be provided. If you know the selection you want, you can press the number to bypass the main menu recording.

The Main Menu options are:

  • Press 1 for Nonindustrial Disability Insurance (NDI) and you are a state employee and an active member of the Public Employees Retirement System, State Teachers’ Retirement System, a state officer, or an employee of the Legislature and your pay stub does not show a CA-SDI contribution:
    • For payments of a claim, press 1.
      • Your employer or the state department or agency for which you work distributes your disability payment once a month.
    • For benefit information, press 2.
      • The NDI weekly benefit amount ranges from a minimum of $135 per week to a maximum of your full pay per week, less any payroll deductions for 26 weeks.
    • For eligibility, press 3.
      • You must be a current, active member of the PERS, CALSTR, a state officer, or employee of the Legislature.
    • For information on how to file NDI claims, press 4. 
      • Obtain First Claim for NDI, DE 8501, from your local office attendance clerk or department personnel office.
    • For information about the waiting period, press 5.
      • Press 0 to talk to an agent if it has been more than 14 days since you or your physician/practitioner submitted your claim, and you have not received your Notice of Determination, DE 8500, stating that your claim has been authorized.
    • For information about a notice of determination and appeals, press 6.
      •  If you are disqualified from receiving Nonindustrial Disability Insurance (NDI) benefits, you will receive an Appeal Form, DE 1000A.
    • For continued claim information, press 7. 
      • Please contact your employer’s payroll specialist or attendance clerk for assistance if you have not received a Notice of Determination indicating that your claim has not been authorized and you have not received your benefit payment by the 15th working day of the month.
  • Press 2 for Disability Insurance (DI) if you are a member of the State Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1000, represented by bargaining units 1, 3, 4, 11, 14, 15, 17, 20, or 21.
    • For information about your benefit payment or to request claim forms, press 1.
      • Status of your claim:
        To access confidential new claim information using the automated phone system, you will be asked to enter your:
        • Social Security number.
        • Date of birth.
        • Mailing ZIP code.
        • Weekly benefit amount or 7-digit home phone number.
          You will select your Personal Identification Number (PIN) the first time you use the automated phone system to access confidential benefit payment information.
      • Benefit Payment:
        Benefit payment information includes the authorized payment amount, the number of days paid, the beginning and ending date of the payment amount, and the date the payment was authorized. To access confidential benefit payment information using the DI automated telephone system, you will be asked to enter your:
        • Social Security number.
        • PIN.
      • Request copy of payment history by mail, Press 1
      • Order claim forms, Press 2
      • Certification Process – EDD needs completed application and medical certification to process a claim. Please allow 14 days for the EDD to process your claim. For initial claims, the 14 day process time begins only once both the application and the medical certification are received.
    • For the SDI Online Help Desk regarding registration, password or security questions, and other system-related questions for online claim filing, press 2.
    • For information about Disability Insurance for state employees, press 3.
      • For information about State Disability Insurance participation, press 1.
      • For information about health benefits while receiving SDI benefits, press 2.
      • For information about leave credits while receiving SDI benefits, press 3.
      • If you have been promoted or moved into a non-SEIU bargaining unit, press 4.
      • For information about Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), press 5.
      • For tax treatment of SDI, press 6.
  • Press 3 for Paid Family Leave (PFL) if you are a member of the State Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1000, represented by bargaining units 1, 3, 4, 11, 14, 15, 17, 20, or 21.
