Your Guide to Job Market Tools and Data
The Labor Market Information (LMI) website offers useful tools for job seekers and employers. You can use it to look up wages, job openings, and job trends for all types of jobs across every region in California.
This guide will help make the most of these tools.
Use the Occupational Profile tool to find wages, job descriptions, and other details about jobs you’re interested in.
- In the first text box, type a job title (for example, “electrician”).
- Choose a county from the drop-down menu then select Search.
- From the list of results, select “Explore Occupation” once you have selected the job you want to learn more about.
- Scroll down the page to see details like duties, wages, job outlook, and number of openings.
- To search for a different job, click Change Occupation at the top of the page.
Use the Occupational Guide to explore detailed information about various jobs in California, including wages, job outlook, educational requirements, and licensing information.
- At the top of the page, select the Search for Occupations tab (next to the EDD logo).
- Under Step 1, choose your county from the list.
Tip: If you want to search for jobs statewide, skip Step 1 and go to Step 2. - In Step 2, enter keywords related to jobs you’re interested in. You can also:
- Enter your education or work experience
- Filter by a 10-year job outlook, industry, or wage range
- In Step 3, select up to three job categories from the drop-down menu.
Tip: If the list is blank, go back to Step 2 and remove filters – try searching with keywords only. - To view your results, choose an option under “Occupation Detail” at the top of the page. These include:
- Job Market Data
- Entry Requirements
- Occupation Profile
- Software and Equipment
- Education Providers

Use these Excel files to look up typical wages for different jobs in specific regions of California.
- Scroll down the page to find the Geographical Area you’re interested in.
- Select the Excel file for the most recent year to open it.
- Go to the OEWS Data tab to see wages by job. Wage data is displayed as:
- Average hourly wages
- Average annual wages
- 25th, 50th, and 75th percentiles
Note: The 25th percentile is a starting wage. The 50th and 75th percentiles are higher wages for more experienced workers.
- To make it easier to search:
- Highlight the column headers in the 3rd row, and all the data underneath them.
- On the Home tab in Excel, go to the Editing section, click Sort & Filter, then choose Filter.
- Select the arrow in the Occupation column. You can scroll through or type a job title in the search box.
Note: You may need to download the Excel file to use the Sort & Filter function.
These Excel files show 10-year job growth projections for different industries and jobs in California.
- Scroll down to the Long-Term Projections (Ten Years) section.
- Find your region and select to download either:
- Industry Projections – shows how different types of businesses are expected to grow or shrink.
- Occupational Projections – shows how many jobs are expected to be available in various jobs in the future.
- To search more easily in the Occupational Projections Excel file:
- Select the filter arrow in the Occupational Title column.
- Deselect Select All, then choose a job title from the list, or type a job title in the search box to narrow your results.
Use this tool to look up businesses in your area by industry, occupation, location, or name.
- On the page, select GO next to one of the options:
- By Industry
- By Occupation
- By Geographic Area
- By Name (requires a business name or keyword first)
- Follow the on-screen steps to get a list of businesses in your selected county.
- To sort the list, choose a column, and then use the up or down arrows to sort the results in order.
- Select any underlined business name to see more details about the business, such as address, business description, number of employees, website, and more.
Use this tool to see the number of job openings by region and see where hiring is happening. The Job Vacancy Statistics Dashboard is updated monthly.
- Select a region from the drop-down menu.
- The page will show the top 10 industries and cities with the most job openings in that area.
Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) Dashboard
Use this interactive dashboard to explore how much different jobs pay and how many people work in those jobs across California. The dashboard is useful for:
- Job seekers comparing wages and job options
- Employers checking typical pay rates
- Teachers and schools planning training programs that match job demand
- Researchers and planners looking at job trends over time
Jobs are grouped using Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) codes, which help organize similar jobs into categories.
How to Use the Dashboard:
- Use the tabs at the top to choose the type of information you want to see.
- The middle section shows charts and graphs about wages and job numbers.
- Use the filters on the right to narrow your results by:
- Job category (SOC code)
- Region
- Pay range
- Year
