After serving in the US Marine Corps, Steve McGuirk never imagined he’d face a layoff and struggle to find work. Although he had an impressive background including a master’s degree from Pepperdine University, Steve knew he needed a change.

“I wanted to find a career where I could contribute and feel a sense of satisfaction, especially with helping others,” McGuirk said.

With that goal in mind, he reached out to the Employment Development Department’s veterans services program in Capitola. There he met Eric Gonzalez, a local veterans employment representative, and Aaron Bailey, a Disabled Veterans Outreach Program specialist.

McGuirk shared that he not only needed assistance in finding employment but also the life challenge of obtaining affordable housing in the Santa Cruz area. The team got to work focusing first on securing McGuirk housing through several veterans assistance organizations including Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing, Nations Finest, and Supportive Services for Veteran Families.

Having gone through housing challenges himself, Bailey could relate to his situation. “I recognized that Steve’s first step was to immediately provide him with housing support,” Bailey said.

With housing settled, Gonzalez and Bailey helped Steve refine his resume and focus on finding the right role that exemplified the change he was looking for. He soon landed a job as a drug and alcohol counselor at Bright Future Recovery.

“I’ve always been drawn to helping others,” McGuirk said. “Flexibility of hours, a part-time schedule enabled me to work and focus on family matters. It means everything to me, to not give up, reach out for assistance. Help may be right around the corner.”

Today, McGuirk is thriving. With stable housing, meaningful work, and a renewed sense of purpose.
