The US Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration (EDA) announces the availability of $2 million in funds for the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Talent Challenge Program. The maximum award is $250,000.

The STEM Talent Challenge Program aims to develop STEM training systems and strengthen regional innovation economies through the implementation and expansion of new work-and-learn models. Applicants must develop or scale STEM talent development strategies related to emerging industries of the future, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, advanced manufacturing and robotics, space exploration, green products, and agricultural technologies. Projects must develop STEM workforce capacity to support growing high-wage, innovation-driven occupations and increase economic competitiveness and regional job creation. Applicants should have or establish community-based partnerships that connect underserved populations with training and employment opportunities to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM fields.

Eligible applicants include a state; an Indian tribe; a city or other political subdivision of a state; a nonprofit organization, an institution of higher education, a public-private partnership, a science or research park, a federal laboratory, or an economic development organization or similar entity whose application is supported by a state, political subdivision of a state, or a native organization; or a consortium of eligible applicants listed above. The closing date for receipt of proposals is October 12, 2021.
