Types of Benefits

The EDD has several benefit programs to help you if you’re out of work or had your hours or wages reduced. Start by reviewing the Unemployment Benefit Programs Flowchart (PDF) for information about what programs and extensions may be available to you.

In addition, the federal CARES Act has expanded unemployment benefits for those impacted by COVID-19.

Also, there is additional assistance for workers and businesses, including funding for services such as housing, child care, and transportation costs.

Visit COVID-19: Unemployment Claims for next steps, including how to certify for benefits. It takes at least three weeks to process applications and issue payment to most eligible workers. We appreciate your patience.

Important Announcements

  • The Lost Wages Assistance program provides an extra $300 per week in addition to your unemployment benefits. If you received unemployment benefits for any weeks between July 26 and September 5, 2020, you may be eligible for LWA payments.
  • If you are getting a phone call from the EDD, your caller ID may show “St of CA EDD” or the UI call center numbers 1-833-978-2511 or 1-800-300-5616.
  • The Governor’s Executive Order waives the one-week unpaid waiting period, so you can collect benefits for the first week you are out of work.

Unemployment Claim Filing Tips

  • Within UI Online, review the final summary before submitting your application. Make sure everything is correct, including your Social Security number and date of birth.
  • Use the name you would enter for a Social Security card or driver license. If your name doesn’t match the name with the DMV and the Social Security Administration, your claim will take extra time to process.
  • For help completing the application, call your local America’s Job Center of CaliforniaSM to schedule a phone appointment. They can also help with mailing or faxing a paper application.

You may be eligible for Unemployment Insurance if you have to miss work because your child’s school is closed. Eligibility considerations include if you have no other care options and you are unable to continue working your normal hours remotely. Note: If you’re not eligible, you may qualify for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance.

You may be eligible for Disability Insurance if you are unable to work because you have been diagnosed with COVID-19 or have symptoms related to COVID-19. You must submit a certification from your treating physician/practitioner or by a state or local health officer. If your physician/practitioner is certifying, telehealth and virtual appointments are acceptable for a physical examination, but certifications are still required.

You may also be eligible for Disability Insurance if you are unable to work because you suspect you have COVID-19 and are quarantined, even if you don’t have symptoms. In this case, you must provide a written certification by a state or local health officer that you are suspected of having COVID-19.

For fastest processing, submit your Disability Insurance claim online and have your supporting medical documentation submitted online soon after. If you are eligible, we process and issue payments within a few weeks of receiving a claim.

Not eligible for Disability Insurance? If you are not found eligible, you may be eligible for unemployment benefits. Learn more about benefits available if you’re not eligible for Disability Insurance.

You may be eligible for Paid Family Leave if you are unable to work because you are caring for a family member who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 or has symptoms related to COVID-19. You must submit a certification from their treating physician/practitioner or by a state or local health officer. If a physician/practitioner is certifying, telehealth and virtual appointments are acceptable for a physical examination, but certifications are still required.
