U.S. Navy veteran Edward Rangel was anxious for a new beginning, after years of unemployment, homelessness, and challenges related to his service-related disability. Edward was determined to use his skills and interest in Information Technology (IT) and Cybersecurity to build a new career. A visit to the America’s Job Center of California (AJCC) in Bakersfield was just what he needed for that fresh start.

Through resume feedback, interview coaching, and opportunities to connect with employers, he began to see new possibilities.

Veteran Services staff member Andrew Zasoski worked closely with Edward to strengthen his resume, explore possible job opportunities, and navigate online applications. A referral to the Wounded Heroes Fund also helped Edward secure a VA Work Study opportunity, providing him with income and valuable experience while he continued his college education. Through Talent Base USA, he received additional training to prepare for the workplace.

“The workshops were extremely insightful and helped me navigate my job search,” he explained. The support gave him practical tools to move forward and helped restore the confidence that years of unemployment had worn down.

“It gave me the confidence I needed to persist through the job market and understand my worth,” Edward said.

That confidence, combined with his determination and the support of his workforce partners, helped Edward reach his goal. This past summer, he accepted a full-time position as IT Manager with Braun Electric Company in Bakersfield, earning $125,000 a year.

After years of uncertainty, Edward found more than a job, he found a path toward financial stability, professional growth, and a future he could be proud of.

Edward’s journey shows that with the right support from dedicated staff and community partners working together, a veteran’s chance at a new beginning is more than a possibility, it’s a reality.
