Current Exams
California hires and promotes state employees based on their skills and qualifications. To work for the state, you’ll need to take and pass an exam for the specific job you’re interested in.
Note: Some temporary positions do not require an exam. Be sure to check the job listing to see if an exam is necessary.
Once you pass the exam, you’ll receive a score and be placed on a list of eligible candidates. Only the top three scores are considered for an appointment. When those top candidates are selected, the next person on the list becomes eligible.
Types of Exams
There are two types of exams: open and promotional.
Open exam: These are for anyone who meets the job requirements, no matter where they work now.
Promotional exams: These are for current or former employees of the Employment Development Department (EDD) who meet the job qualifications.
Some exams are given by us, and others are run by the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR), which we also use.
