California’s unemployment rate dropped to 5.3 percent despite California’s nonfarm payroll jobs decreasing by 11,600 jobs in March 2025, according to the latest Employment Development Department (EDD) data coming from two separate surveys. March’s job reduction follows a downward revised job loss of 21,800 for February 2025.

Important Note: The employment data for the month of February 2025 comes from the survey week that included February 12. Data for March is scheduled for release on April 18, 2025. What You Need to Know: Los Angeles County workers, business owners, and self-employed people affected by the California firestorms now have until Tuesday, June 10, 2025, to apply for federal Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA). All required documentation to support that the applicant was working or self-employed when the disaster occurred must be submitted within 90 days from the mail date of their notice that states a supporting document is needed.

January’s job gain follows a post-benchmark, revised job gain of 39,000 for December 2024.

The Employment Development Department (EDD) is prepared to assist workers who have lost their jobs due to the recent federal layoffs and funding cuts impacting federal contractors. Los Angeles County workers, business owners, and self-employed people affected by the California firestorms now have until Monday, March 31, 2025, at 10 p.m. to apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA). Small businesses and workers also have until Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. to apply for direct financial support from the Los Angeles Region Small Business and Worker Relief Funds.
