Issued: July 8, 2021

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), announces the availability of approximately $75 million in cooperative agreement awards for the Public Health Informatics and Technology (PHIT) Workforce Development Program. The goal of this program is to train at least 4,000 participants in public health information and technology to create and expand a sustainable public health workforce. The program prioritizes recruiting underrepresented participants from minority serving institutions (MSI) and capacity building for public health education programs at MSIs and other institutions of higher education.

Successful applicants will develop a consortium approach to establish the program curriculum, recruit and train participants, develop paid internship opportunities, create a sustainability plan, and assist in career placement. If awarded, applicants must participate in a Community of Practice to share best practices with other awardees.

Eligible applicants are accredited colleges and universities that offer terminal degrees. Consortiums must include at least one MSI, preferably as the lead applicant. In order to be considered for this program, applicants must develop a consortium with representatives from state, local, or county health departments; and community-based organizations such as community health centers, rural health clinics, behavioral health providers, and/or other local non-profit or clinical providers.
