EDD Open Data Portal FAQs

Open data is the process of making non-personal, public information widely accessible and usable by people and machines, without limitations.

Open data allows government to make data easily available for others to use to improve accessibility, transparency, and accountability of government.

No, you do not need to register for or have access to all of the EDD Open Data Portal features. You can start searching data right away.

When you create an account, you can:

  • Create custom views on datasets.
  • Save views on datasets.

To learn more, visit How to Use the EDD Open Data Portal.

There are more than 22 local California government organizations that use the same open data platform we use. This includes:

  • California State Controller’s Office
  • Franchise Tax Board
  • Health and Human Services
  • California State Treasurer’s Office
  • California GovOps
  • Various cities, counties, and municipalities

You can dynamically link to data in several ways. Select the data set you want to link to:

  • SODA API: The Socrata Open Data API (SODA) provides programmatic access to this dataset including the ability to filter, query, and aggregate data. To use this option, select Export then select SODA API. The link to the API Endpoint will be available for you to use.

  • OData: OData (Open Data Protocol) RESTful APIs are easy to use. The OData metadata, a machine-readable description of the data model of the APIs, allows the creation of generic client proxies and tools. Some of them can help you interact with OData even without knowing anything about the protocol. To use this option, select Export then select OData. The link to the OData Endpoint will be available for you to use.

The EDD Open Data Portal also allows you to publish interactive data tools on an external webpage or intranet site using the data embed tool.

To embed a dataset or visualization, select Embed, customize the code (optional), and copy and paste the code provided.
