Paid Family Leave - Self-Employed

The EDD offers an optional Disability Insurance Elective Coverage (DIEC) program. The program is for self-employed individuals or independent contractors who do not pay into State Disability Insurance (SDI) but want Paid Family Leave (PFL) and Disability Insurance benefits. DIEC is funded through quarterly premiums and can protect you against loss of income when you are unable to work.

Eligibility Requirements

PFL provides benefit payments when you need to take time off from work to:

  • Care for a seriously ill family member (a child, parent, parent-in-law, grandparent, grandchild, sibling, spouse, or registered domestic partner).
  • Bond with a new child entering the family through birth, adoption, or foster care placement.
  • Participate in a qualifying event because of the military deployment of an eligible family member (spouse, registered domestic partner, parent, or child).
