Are you a new Father?

Have you recently become a father and would like to take time to bond with your child? If so, start here to learn more about your California Paid Family Leave (PFL) options!

If you’re a foster care or adoptive father, visit the Foster Care/Adoptive Parents page.

Are You Eligible?

To be eligible for California PFL benefits, you must:

  • Have welcomed a new child into the family in the past 12 months either through birth, adoption, or foster care placement.
  • Have paid into State Disability Insurance (noted as “CASDI” on paystubs) in the past 5 to 18 months.
  • Not have taken the maximum 8 weeks of PFL in the past 12 months.
Fun fact: You can break up your eight weeks of leave. You don’t have to take it all at once!

Citizenship and immigration status do not affect eligibility.

If you’re still not sure, read more about Eligibility Requirements to find out if you qualify for PFL.

San Francisco workers: Your employer may be required to provide supplemental compensation to you if you are receiving PFL benefits for bonding with a new child through birth, adoption, or foster care placement. For more information, visit the City and County of San Francisco, Office of Labor Standards Enforcement Paid Parental Leave Ordinance (PPLO).
